The bend of the Crnojević river on Lake Skadar

Excursions in Podgorica

Podgorica is the only town on this list without a sea, and the mix of routes is different: not boats but monasteries, canyons and Lake Skadar. In return, Ostrog is about an hour away rather than two from the coast, and the northern canyons are half as far as from Budva.

Ostrog, Dajbabe and Cetinje

Ostrog monastery is a church cut into a sheer cliff at around nine hundred metres and one of the most visited Orthodox shrines in the Balkans. It is about an hour from Podgorica, so you can arrive at opening time and leave before the coaches from the coast get there. The Ostrog and Podgorica group trip costs from €39 per person; it runs in season and does not operate from October to May. The operator runs all its tours, group and private, only with a Russian-speaking guide.

Nearby is the cave monastery of Dajbabe, dug into a hill in the shape of a cross — a place almost nobody knows about. The old capital Cetinje, with the monastery holding the right hand of John the Baptist and a fragment of the Cross, is thirty-five kilometres and forty minutes away.

The north is closer than from the coast

The road north starts right in Podgorica and runs through the Morača canyon, on a ledge cut into sheer rock. The Đurđevića bridge is noticeably closer from here than from the coast, where the drive takes about four hours each way, so the day is shorter. In autumn 2026 the bridge is closed for reconstruction until 26 October, though it may reopen sooner; check before you go. The Tara and Morača canyons with the Black Lake cost from €58 per person, rafting on the Tara from €82 with breakfast and lunch, though only in season: it does not run from October to May.

Lake Skadar next door

Virpazar is twenty-five kilometres away, and so is the viewpoint over the bend of the Crnojević river. The simplest option is to find a boat on the spot in Virpazar: a seat on a shared boat costs €15–25 per person, a private boat from €80 for two hours for the whole group, plus €5 entry to the national park. Expect water lilies, channels through the reeds and a swim. The best time is May and June, when the lilies flower and the channels are navigable, or September, when the bird migration begins.

Prices by format

Prices are starting prices, per adult. A child's ticket is usually about half the adult price; the operator gives the age limit and the exact sum in each route description. Entrance tickets and lunch are normally paid separately on the day — the operator gives you the exact figures.

By city

Common questions

Are there boat trips from Podgorica?

Not on the sea — the city is an hour from the coast. The nearest water is Lake Skadar: Virpazar is twenty-five kilometres away, and boats are arranged on the spot — €15–25 per person on a shared boat, a private one from €80 for two hours.

Why do routes take less time from Podgorica?

The city sits where the roads inland meet, so Ostrog and the north are noticeably closer than from the coast, where Budva to the Đurđevića bridge is about four hours each way. The price is the same and you spend less time on the bus.

What to wear to the monasteries?

Shoulders and knees must be covered — that is a condition of entry, not advice. Women are most comfortable in a long skirt or trousers, and a headscarf is welcome but not required; shorts will not do for men. Wear comfortable shoes: the path at Ostrog is stony.

Are the tours from Podgorica in English?

No: the operator runs all its tours, group and private, with a Russian-speaking guide only; diving, paragliding and fishing are the exceptions, in Russian, English or Serbian. If that rules them out, a hire car is the honest alternative — Virpazar on Lake Skadar is 25 km away.

Which tours leave from Podgorica, and what do they cost?

The Tara and Morača canyons from €58 per person, Ostrog and Podgorica from €39, the Balkan Switzerland jeep tour from €69 and rafting from €82. Ostrog, the jeeps and the rafting run in season only and do not operate from October to May.

Can I visit Ostrog without a tour?

Yes: entry and parking are free, and a minibus up to the upper monastery costs €1–2. The group trip from Podgorica is from €39 and runs in season only.

What do I pay on the spot on the northern route?

Entry to Durmitor National Park is €5, and children under 15 go free. Lunch is usually extra.
