Things to do in Montenegro

Six ways to see Montenegro: from the air, from the water and from the road. Pick a category — inside are the actual routes, honest descriptions and booking with the operator.

Group tour, private tour or your own boat?

The six categories differ less in where they go than in how your day runs. A coach tour is a seat in a group of 20–50, a fixed timetable and a price per person: in season, from €39 for Ostrog with Podgorica to €73 for the Heart of Montenegro tour from Budva. A private tour is a car and guide for your party alone, from €90 for the whole group: for four people that is comparable with the coach, and the pace and the stops are yours. If you don't speak Russian, bear one thing in mind: the operator runs all its sightseeing tours, group and private, only with a Russian-speaking guide, so choosing a private tour will not change the language (diving, paragliding and fishing are the exception: Russian, English or Serbian). The honest alternative is to hire a car and go on your own.

The same choice applies on the water. A seat on a shared boat around the Bay of Kotor costs from €53 per person. A whole boat with a skipper starts at €355 for three hours, which split six ways comes to about €60 each. With fewer than five of you, the group boat is almost always cheaper; with more, price up a boat of your own — it also spares you a commentary you may not follow. Details are in the yacht charter section.

Why the price depends on where you are staying

Coaches collect passengers along the coast, so the same route usually costs less from Budva than from Kotor, Tivat or Bar. The Tara and Morača canyons tour starts at €58 from Budva or Podgorica and €68 from Kotor, Tivat or Bar; the Heart of Montenegro tour at €73 from Budva and €83 from Kotor or Tivat. Route descriptions show the lowest price, and the operator will quote the exact figure for your hotel.

Heading north in autumn 2026? Check the route before you book: the Đurđevića bridge over the Tara is closed for reconstruction until 26 October, though it is expected to reopen earlier.

What do tour prices include?

The price covers transport and a guide who stays with the group all day. Entrance tickets to monasteries, fortresses and national parks, lunch and any boat ride along the way are usually paid on the spot — allow another €5–20 per person. The operator lists these costs before you pay; if the description doesn't, ask.

Tours are run by independent companies, and you book and pay them directly. Prices checked in September 2026.

Common questions

How much do tours in Montenegro cost?

In season, group tours start at €39 per person. A full day to the Tara canyon and Black Lake starts at €58 from Budva, and day trips across the border from €43 (Dubrovnik from Herceg Novi). A private tour with a car and guide starts at €90 for the whole group. Prices checked in September 2026.

Is a tour cheaper than hiring a car in Montenegro?

For two people, almost always: on the longer routes a tour costs less than a hire car plus fuel and parking, and nobody has to drive the hairpin roads. For four, the car usually works out cheaper.

Do children pay less on tours?

Yes — a child's ticket is usually about half the adult price. The age it applies from and the exact sum are in each route's description.

Are there tours in English in Montenegro?

Not among the tours listed here: the operator runs all of them, group and private, only with a Russian-speaking guide, and a private booking does not change that. Diving, paragliding and fishing are the exception — they are run in Russian, English or Serbian. For sightseeing without a Russian-speaking guide, the honest alternative is to hire a car and explore on your own.
