Paragliding in Montenegro: flying over Budva
Updated:
From 850 metres up, the Budva riviera looks like a map someone unrolled for you: the old town the size of a coin, the island of Sveti Nikola, a ribbon of beaches running all the way to Sveti Stefan, and behind your back the mountains climbing towards Lovćen. To see all this in the open wind rather than through the glass of a viewpoint, you need a paraglider.
It sounds extreme. It is not: you fly in tandem, the instructor does everything, and your entire job is a few running steps down the slope. After that the wing does the work. The flight lasts 25–45 minutes and costs from €87 per person.
What it costs
The flight is from €87 per person — adults and children from seven, one price. That covers the transfer from your accommodation and back if you are staying in Budva, Bečići or Rafailovići, the drive up the mountain and the flight itself.
Only the filming is extra: from €5 to €15 for photos and video, agreed with the instructor on the spot. You can bring your own camera or phone if you are not worried about holding it at altitude.
From Tivat, Petrovac and other resorts they will collect you for a surcharge — or make your own way to Budva: intercity buses run all day.
How the flight goes
Meeting and the drive. A car picks you up and climbs from Budva to Brajići mountain in about fifteen minutes — 850 metres above the sea. The views start on the road up.
The launch. At the top the instructor clips you into the harness and explains a two-minute task: a few steps of run down the slope, and the ground simply stops being necessary. No jumping, no cliff edge — the wing fills with wind and lifts you.
The flight. You are airborne for 25–45 minutes, depending on the thermals. Below you: Budva with its old town, the island of Sveti Nikola, Bečići, Rafailovići, and Sveti Stefan on the horizon. Your hands are free to film.
The landing. You come down on the beach at Bečići, among the swimmers. Softly, on your feet, with the best possible finish: you have just descended from the sky to the sea.
Who it suits
Two limits: age from seven, weight up to 120 kg. No training, no medical certificate, no experience — that is the point of a tandem flight, the instructor behind you does all the work.
Fear of heights is personal, but pilots are right when they say flying is calmer than standing on a balcony: there is no edge to fall from, only a seat harness and sky. Most passengers stop gripping the lines within the first minute.
When to fly
The season runs from April to mid-October, every day except Saturday. The best light for photographs is early morning or the hours before sunset: the sea turquoise, the shadows long, Sveti Stefan like a postcard.
Flying depends on wind. In unsuitable weather the flight is moved to another day or the deposit is returned. Do not book it for the last day of your holiday — leave room for a reschedule.
