When to charter a boat: season, wind and water
Updated:
The short answer: June and September. The water is already, or still, warm, the wind is lighter and more boats are free than in July and August. But the hour matters more than the month: mornings are almost always calmer than afternoons.
Water by month
| Month | Water | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| May | 18–20 °C | Bracing; not everyone swims |
| June | 22–24 °C | The first full month |
| July | 25–26 °C | The water reaches its peak by the end of the month |
| August | 25–26 °C | The peak holds; more people, higher prices |
| September | 23–25 °C | Warmer than June |
| October | 20–22 °C | People swim, but not for long |
The sea warms more slowly than the air and cools more slowly too — which is why September beats June on water temperature even though the air says otherwise.
The winds that cancel trips
The maestral is the daytime summer breeze off the sea; it gets up after midday and drops towards evening. Routine: a little motion, no cancelled route.
The jugo (sirocco) is the southerly off the open sea. This is the one that brings the swell that keeps boats away from the Blue Cave and off anchor in exposed coves. It sits for days at a time.
The bora is the northerly off the mountains, sharp and cold, mostly a winter wind; locally it is called the bura. In summer it is rare but arrives fast.
The bay is lucky: Boka is closed in by mountains on every side and almost never has a swell. The open coast south of Budva feels the wind in full.
What time to set out
Mornings are calmer than afternoons in almost any weather. A nine or ten o’clock departure gives you flat water and empty coves; by three the water has turned choppy and the anchorages are taken.
The exception is the Blue Cave: the light inside works from eleven to three, when the sun is high. Routes including the grotto therefore start later, and that is physics rather than the skipper sleeping in. Since 2026 motor vessels have not been allowed inside the grotto: the boat waits at the entrance, and the last stretch is by kayak, SUP or swimming.
If the trip is called off
In a swell, operators move the date or refund. That is standard practice, but the terms are not volunteered — settle them at booking with one question: what happens if the weather cancels.
If you are planning a single day on the water for the whole holiday, do not put it on your last day. Two or three days of slack almost always saves it.
When to book
In July and August boats go a week or two ahead and what is left sits above the median price. In May, June and September two or three days is enough. In October some operators have wound down and others run to the end of the month — ask.
High-season prices are higher, but not by multiples: what changes sharply is the choice, not the price. You charter the whole boat with a skipper, from €355 for three hours. What each vessel costs is in what a yacht charter costs.
What to bring
A windbreaker — it is five to seven degrees cooler on the water than ashore, and under way there is the airflow as well. Sunscreen and a hat: there is almost no shade on deck. Light-soled shoes, since dark rubber marks the deck.
If you get seasick: pills half an hour before departure and a catamaran rather than a monohull — two hulls barely roll.
Where to go in which month
June and September have every route open, including the far coves of Luštica and the grotto. In July and August the popular anchorages are crowded — go further out or take an early departure. In May and October the bay is the safer bet: the weather barely interferes there.
Where the routes actually go is in coves with no road. How the day works is in a day on a boat. The boats, with prices and free dates, are on the yacht charter page.
The calmest window on the water is the evening one, and it has its own format: sunset on a yacht.
Water temperatures are long-term averages. Prices are indicative “from” figures, checked in September 2026. Whether a given day works is the skipper’s call. Services are provided by independent companies; booking and payment happen directly with them.
