Sunset on a yacht: when to set out and what it costs

Updated:

The shortest and one of the most underrated formats: three hours in the evening, from €355 for the whole vessel. Boats leave an hour and a half to two hours before sunset: around seven in the evening in June, around half past five in September. Midday on the water is hot, busy and flatly lit. Towards sunset everything changes: the wind drops, the speedboats head back to the marinas and the water turns to glass.

When to set out

Count back from sunset, not from a timetable. Leaving an hour and a half to two hours before the sun goes down gives you the whole evening: it is still light on the way to the cove, the swim lands in the golden hour, and the run home is at dusk with the shore lit up.

Sunset in Montenegro falls around 20:20 in June and July, 19:45 in mid-August, 19:00 in mid-September and 18:00 in mid-October. In June that means setting out around seven, in September around half past five.

There is a practical reason as well as a visual one: the daytime breeze drops towards evening. Morning and evening are the two calmest windows on the water, and the middle of the day is the windiest.

What it costs

Three hours on a motor boat for up to seven guests is from €355 for the vessel, not per person; a boat for up to nine costs from €390. For two that is expensive; for four to six it works out at roughly €60–90 a head for an evening that does not repeat. A short two-hour speedboat trip out of Budva costs from €235.

A catamaran from €520 for four hours is the choice when it matters that nothing rolls: two hulls are noticeably steadier. For a group of more than nine you need a twelve-guest catamaran, from €780. A sailing yacht from €390 for three to four hours is about quiet — under sail you hear only the water.

What the price covers and what is extra is in what a yacht charter costs.

Where evening trips go

Not far: the point is the light, not the mileage.

From Budva — along the coast to St Nicholas island and back past the old town, whose walls are lit from below at sunset.

From Tivat and Kotor — deeper into the bay towards Perast: the mountains hide the sun earlier, and an even diffused light holds on the water for a long time.

From Herceg Novi — out towards the mouth of the bay, where the sunset runs all the way to the horizon instead of disappearing behind a ridge.

More on the places is in coves with no road.

What to bring

A windbreaker, without fail: after the sun goes down it is five to seven degrees cooler on the water than ashore, and you feel it at once. Light-soled shoes — dark rubber marks the deck.

On most boats you may bring your own food and drink; confirm when booking, as some operators set their own terms on this.

Who it suits

Anyone with one free evening rather than a whole day. Anyone who would rather not spend half a day in the sun. And couples prepared to pay for the whole boat: the evening trip is the format where the short duration does not feel like a cut-down programme.

Prices are indicative “from” figures, per vessel, checked in September 2026. Sunset times are averages for the coast. Services are provided by independent companies; booking and payment happen directly with them.
