Northern Montenegro in Two Days: A Route With One Night

Updated:

In one day you can drive the north. In two you can see it. The difference matters: a day trip from the coast is eight hours at the wheel and three twenty-minute stops. With a night in Žabljak it becomes a real route.

Here is how the two days fit together: on the first, Ostrog, the Morača canyon, Đurđevića bridge and Žabljak; on the second, Durmitor and the drive back past Piva Lake.

Day one: coast → Ostrog → the bridge → Žabljak

Leave at seven. Budva to Podgorica is about 65 kilometres, an hour and a quarter; from Kotor it is about 85 kilometres and an hour and three quarters.

Ostrog monastery, 09:30. A church cut into a vertical cliff at about 900 metres, and one of the most visited Orthodox shrines in the Balkans. An hour to an hour and a half with the climb. See Ostrog monastery.

The Morača canyon, on the way. The road runs on a shelf cut into sheer rock with the opposite wall thirty metres away. Stop at the viewpoint and at the 13th-century Morača monastery with its frescoes.

Đurđevića bridge, 14:00. Five arches, more than 150 metres above the river, a zipline across the gorge. Lunch at one of the cafés over the drop. An hour to an hour and a half — Đurđevića bridge. In autumn 2026 the bridge is closed for reconstruction until 26 October, though it is expected to reopen earlier; check before you go.

Žabljak, 16:00. Check in and walk the Black Lake loop at sunset — 3.5 kilometres. Apartments cost from €30–40 a night: Žabljak.

Day one total: 250 kilometres, five hours of driving.

Day two: Durmitor → Piva Lake → the coast

Morning in the park. Options by fitness:

  • The Black Lake again, in morning light and without people;
  • The Sedlo pass at 1,907 metres — the ring road round the massif, an hour and a half with stops;
  • The Ice Cave — four to five hours in the mountains, for the prepared.

More on the trails in Durmitor and the Black Lake.

Return via Plužine and Piva Lake. An hour longer and far better looking: an emerald reservoir 45 kilometres long, the Piva canyon and more than fifty tunnels cut through the rock.

Back on the coast by seven in the evening.

Day two total: 280 kilometres, six hours of driving.

What to know

Warm clothes. 30 °C on the coast, 10–12 °C at night in Žabljak. In August.

Fuel. Fill up in Podgorica: stations are sparse in the north. See fuel and petrol stations.

Roads. Surfaced everywhere except some viewpoint approaches. Speeds of 60–80 km/h, hairpin bends, unlit tunnels. A new traffic law has been in force since 7 August 2026, and fines have gone up two to three times. On the rules see driving rules in Montenegro.

Tolls. Montenegro has two toll roads, and one of them is on the way north: the Smokovac–Mateševo motorway beyond Podgorica, €3.50 for the full stretch. It bypasses the Morača canyon; the old road through the canyon is free.

The car. A compact will do, but not the lowest one: gravel in the park is hard on the underbody, which insurance usually excludes — insurance and deposit. Options are on the car rental page.

Without your own car

The organised two-day trip north with an overnight is not running in 2026, so the ready-made options are one-day formats:

All of them come only with a Russian-speaking guide. All options are under things to do.

Distances and timings are indicative; prices checked in September 2026. In winter the route changes: some roads close under snow.
