Car hire in Tirana

Most visitors fly into Tirana: Mother Teresa airport at Rinas is 17 km from the centre, and it has the widest choice of cars — from €11 a day, economy from €12. The car is handed over in the car park by the terminal. From here it is about two hours to Shkodër and Berat, and 5–6 hours down the Riviera to Sarandë.

How car collection works at Tirana airport

An agent from the rental company meets you on arrival, you sign the contract on the spot and get the keys in the car park by the terminal. Some companies have desks inside the terminal itself. You can return the car at the airport or in town — you choose when booking; returns outside office hours are arranged in advance, sometimes for an extra charge.

The centre is about 17 km away, 20–40 minutes depending on traffic. If you do not need the car on day one, the Rinas Express bus runs from the terminal to Skanderbeg Square: 400 lek, 30–40 minutes, roughly once an hour (it does not always keep to the timetable). You can then collect the car in town — some companies bring it to your hotel.

How much does car hire in Tirana cost?

The lowest price is from €11 a day. By class, at the airport: economy from €12, saloon from €19, crossover from €21, minivan from €30, premium from €34. Prices checked in October 2026; the exact amount for your dates is worked out by the company.

Seasonal swings in Tirana are smaller than across the country: about €16 a day on average in winter, around €26–28 in summer and September. The peak here falls in September, not August.

Parking in central Tirana: zones and paying by text

The centre is split into zones: A costs 100 lek an hour (about €1), B 40 lek, C 20 lek. You pay on weekdays from 7:30 to 20:00; evenings and weekends are free. Payment is by text to 50500 from an Albanian SIM: the registration without spaces, a space, then the zone letter, for example “TR123AR A”. A reminder arrives ten minutes before your time runs out.

Outside the centre parking is free, but leave alone any space with a number plate sign or one “reserved” with a chair or a rope. Covered car parks with a barrier charge 100–300 lek an hour, many with a daily rate; keep the ticket until you leave.

What driving in Tirana is like

Roads in Tirana are good, with working lights and signs, but rush-hour traffic is heavy — easier to sit it out on foot or in a café. Indicators are used sparingly: at roundabouts watch where other cars are heading rather than their lights. The town limit is 40 km/h, and phones are hands-free only.

Day trips from Tirana

Close by are Mount Dajti and its national park (25 km) and Petrela castle (about 18 km). About an hour gets you to Krujë with its castle and old bazaar, about 40 minutes to the sea at Durrës, and about two hours to UNESCO-listed Berat or to Shkodër. Gjirokastër is 4–5 hours away, Sarandë along the Riviera 5–6.

One route near Tirana is off limits for hire cars: the track to Qafë Shtamë nature park via Lake Bovilla. It is unsurfaced, and the insurance does not apply there.

Coming from Montenegro

Tirana is the second stop on the road from Montenegro: from Podgorica it is about 60 km to Shkodër through the Hani i Hotit–Božaj crossing, then about two hours more to Tirana. You can arrive in a Montenegrin hire car — only with the company’s written permission and a Green Card (details on the Montenegro car hire page) — or pick up a car in Tirana, where the choice is widest.
