The ferry port from Italy
Bar is the port where ferries from Italy come in. If you arrived by sea without a car, it makes sense to collect one right here and carry on north or south along the coast. The port and the centre are close together; delivery is to your hotel or to the port by arrangement.
The south: long sandy beaches and Lake Skadar
The sandiest stretch of coast begins at Bar: Ulcinj is 35–40 minutes away, with Velika Plaža just beyond it. Inland in the other direction lie Lake Skadar and Virpazar. Budva is about an hour north. How to fit it all into a trip is in the Montenegro by car in 5 days route.
What is near Bar
Stari Bar lies a few kilometres inland — the ruins of a town destroyed by earthquakes and wars, overlooking the valley. Nearby, in Mirovica, grows Stara Maslina, an olive tree more than two thousand years old. To the south are Ulcinj (35–40 minutes) and Velika Plaža — thirteen kilometres of sand and the longest beach in the country. Just north is Sutomore beach.
When to come here
Bar does not live on tourism alone: it is a port and a working town, so it does not empty out in winter the way the resorts further north do. In summer it is cheaper than Budva and noticeably less crowded. The south warms up earlier — people start swimming here in late May.
Before you set off
If you arrived by ferry with your own car you do not need a rental — but the local rules and fines are still worth reading: there is no official speeding tolerance here. Heading south to Ulcinj or north along the sea, look at how a car compares with the bus and a transfer — coastal buses are frequent.
Where to go from here
Bar is a convenient starting point for the south. North along the sea: Sutomore, Petrovac, Budva — about an hour. South: Ulcinj in 35–40 minutes, with Velika Plaža just beyond it. Inland: the road to Lake Skadar from the southern side, less travelled from the coast than the Podgorica approach.
If you arrived by ferry from Italy with your own car you do not need a rental at all — but the route still helps: Montenegro by car in 5 days.

How long is the drive from Bar to Ulcinj and Velika Plaža?
Ulcinj is 35–40 minutes south along the coast, and Velika Plaža begins just beyond it — the longest sandy beach in the country, which is rare here: the coast is mostly pebble. Just north lies Sutomore beach.

Which airport is closer to Bar?

How do I get from Bar to Lake Skadar?
Virpazar is 40 minutes away through the Sozina tunnel (€2.50). Entry to the national park is €5; a seat on a shared boat costs €15–25, a private boat €35–40 an hour.
What does a day at Velika Plaža and Ada Bojana cost?
