Podgorica Airport Transfers: Prices and Drive Times

Updated:

A transfer from Podgorica airport costs from €34 per car within the city, from €73 to Budva and from €86 to Bar. That is an economy car for up to four people, one way, to any address in the destination town; the return costs the same. The Bay of Kotor is a long way from here, and dearer: Kotor is from €130, Herceg Novi from €164.

If you are choosing between flights into Podgorica and into Tivat, add the transfer to the fare before you decide. For Budva the difference in starting prices is €15 per car; for Kotor it is €86. For the southern coast, Bar and Ulcinj, it works the other way: Podgorica is the cheaper start.

How long is the drive to the coast?

Budva is about 65 kilometres and an hour and a quarter away; Kotor is about 85 kilometres and an hour and three quarters. In July and August allow one and a half to two times as long on the coast. Ulcinj lies beyond Bar, another 27 kilometres and 35–40 minutes further on.

If you are driving yourself, budget for the tolls. The road to Bar runs through the Sozina tunnel, which costs €2.50, and the Smokovac–Mateševo motorway heading north is €3.50 for the full stretch.

When Podgorica is the better airport

Staying in the capital. If your hotel is in Podgorica, a transfer within the city is from €34, the lowest transfer price from either airport. What to see in the city in half a day is in Podgorica in half a day.

Lake Skadar, Ostrog and the north. Virpazar, on Lake Skadar, is 25 kilometres from Podgorica, and Ostrog monastery and the north of the country are also closer from here than from the coast. For what to see, read Lake Skadar and the Crnojević River, Ostrog monastery and northern Montenegro in two days. Also just outside Podgorica is the Šipčanik wine cellar, which runs tastings; more on it and on local wine in Montenegrin wine and rakija.

The southern coast. Bar is from €86 (€112 from Tivat) and Ulcinj from €136 (€164 from Tivat). Ulcinj is the southernmost town in the country; see Ulcinj and Velika Plaža.

When Tivat wins. If your hotel is on the Bay of Kotor or in Budva. From Tivat, Kotor is from €44, Herceg Novi from €116 and Budva from €58. If the fares into both airports are the same, choose Tivat; the details are in Tivat airport transfers: prices to every town.

Transfer, bus or your own car?

Bus. There is one from the airport itself: the stop is outside the terminal, and buses run to Podgorica bus station 27–28 times a day on weekdays and 14 times on Sundays, for €3 and a journey of 11–50 minutes. Two a day go straight to Budva, €12 and about an hour and a half. From the bus station there are buses to every town in the country, including more than 30 a day to Budva (about an hour and a half, €6–9). Timetables and fares for your date are on busticket4.me. It suits you if you are travelling light. A taxi from the airport is the most expensive way into town; if you take one, agree the fare before you get in. How buses work around the country is explained in Montenegro without a car.

Hire car. If your first stop is the lake, Ostrog or the north, it makes more sense to collect a car at the airport. Economy starts at €25 a day in low season, and in July and August costs about twice the May price. How pick-up works in Podgorica is covered in car hire at Tivat and Podgorica airports, and the options are on the car rental page.

Transfer. The sensible choice when you are heading for the sea as a group, with children or with plenty of luggage, and do not need a car for the first few days: about €18 each for four people going to Budva, with the child seat and a bigger car arranged in advance.

Meeting the driver and paying

Your driver waits at the exit from arrivals holding a sign with your first name and surname. The first hour of waiting is included; each hour after that is €12. You give your flight number when you book, or later if you do not have it yet. If the flight is delayed, call the organiser on the number in your voucher.

When you book, a small deposit is taken by Visa or Mastercard; the rest goes to the driver in cash after the ride, as there is no card machine in the car. You can also skip the deposit, in which case you upload your flight tickets when booking. The deposit is refunded if you cancel 48 hours or more ahead; cancel or reschedule later than that, or miss the pick-up, and it is not.

Child seats are a legal requirement; they are ordered when you book and paid for separately. A transfer for the next day can be booked until 17:00 Montenegro time, after that only by request; in high season, book 3–4 days ahead. The booking form is on the airport transfers page. The service is provided by an independent company, and you book and pay directly with them.
